The years between 713 and 741 were the best time of the Tang Dynasty.Emperor Xuanzong ruled during this time.The economy （經(jīng)濟） was developing fast，and so were literature and the arts.
    But later came the An Shi Rebellion （安史之亂，755-763）.The Tang Dynasty started to decline.This influenced the lives of many people，including poet Du Fu and palace musician Li Guinian.
    During the rebellion，the unhappiness was the making of Du Fu as a poet.Eva Shan Chou has written that， "What he saw around him — the lives of his family，neighbors，and strangers — what he heard，and what he hoped for or feared from the progress of different kinds of campaign — these became the lasting themes of his poems".
    This poem was written in 770，the last year of Du's life.While writing about meeting his friend Li，Du looked back at the last 40 years of his life，as well as of the country's history.
    Du and Li first met at a party held by a royal （皇族的） member in the capital city of Chang'an.They were young and talented，and were often invited to these kinds of parties.The first two lines of Du's poem describe the colorful social life of the Tang Dynasty.
    But because of the An Shi Rebellion，Li had to leave Chang'an and performed in the streets to make money.Du also traveled around the country.By the time the two met again 40 years later，they had both experienced hard times.The last two lines show how deeply the poet missed the good old days and how helpless he felt about his fate （命運）.
