Children are hardly invited to speak at the United Nation General Assembly(聯(lián)合國(guó)).But there stood Felix Finkbeiner,a German boy. "Adults know the environmental problems and they know the solutions," he said. "But we don't know why there is so little action.Perhaps we have to depend on ourselves to save our future."
At the time of this speech,F(xiàn)inkbeiner was already four years into his leadership of th e"Plant-for-the-Planet" group. Now,F(xiàn)inkbeiner is 25 years old and his group has planted over 14 billion trees in more than 130 nations.Tens of thousands of children have been trained to become "climate ambassadors(大使)" in their home communities.
"Plant-for-the-Planet" came out of a school project when Finkbeiner was a fourth-grader.The topic was climate change. To his nine-year-old worldview, that meant a danger to his favorite animal, the polar bear. The boy began to do his research online.Instead of information about polar bears,he found stories about Wangari Maathai. The Kenyan woman had planted 30 million trees in order to fix the environment of her hometown. The effort won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
Finkbeiner realized that it was not really about saving polar bears.Instead,it was about saving human beings. He made a big decision:to plant one million trees in Germany.Finkbeiner was serious about his goal. Two months later,F(xiàn)inkbeiner planted his first tree,a crab apple(酸蘋果樹),near the entrance to his school. The story attracted a lot of media attention in no time.Word spread quickly. The next thing Finkbeiner knew,he was speaking to the European Parliament(歐洲議會(huì)).
"Plant-for-the-Planet" is now setting its sights on planting one trillion trees. That's 1,000 billion. Those trees could take in ten billion tons of carbon dioxide every year.Finkbeiner says that will buy time for the world to get serious about climate change.
