  • 211.Just the other day,I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year,I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer was giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and,I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer's opinion, foreigners are an"opportunity"to improve your oral English:whenever you see a foreigner,American or English, you should practice speaking English with him or her.If the foreigner doesn't want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn't want to spend time with anyway.I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other "Lao Wai" living in China,I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar ways. However, this cultural isolation is something I simply accept as part of being here.So far my time in China has been rewarding.I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However,I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an "opportunity" to improve their oral English.I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English.I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation.I have had people asking me non-stop questions for half an hour at the weekly English Corner...
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone whose company they really enjoy. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners,I would say that it is this:Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities.Expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush.          If your only reason for becoming friends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don't have a foreign friend for long.

(1)Why is the writer of the passage interested in the book "How to make friends with foreigners"?

A.Because he wants to have some more close Chinese Friends.
B.Because he has greatly improved his Chinese language skills.
C.Because no Chinese people would like to make friends with him.
D.Because he wants to know about the Chinese writer's advice on this topic.
(2)According to the writer of the book "How to make friends with foreigners",
    .
A.his advice may make foreigners angry
B.it is rude of you to ask a foreigner questions
C.you should choose a good foreigner to practise English with
D.don't waste time on a foreigner who doesn't answer your questions
(3)In the fourth paragraph, the writer uses "I have had ..."three times, because
    .
A.he had no better sentences to express his ideas
B.he wanted to show how he hated to make friends with Chinese
C.he wanted to show how he hated to be treated as an "opportunity"
D.he met Chinese who wanted to make friends with him only three times
(4)Which sentence may be the best to fill in the "
    "in the last paragraph?
A.True friendships stand the test of time.
B.Learn about different cultures to make real friends.
C.Friends are about opportunities or personal advantages.
D.There's real friendship between people from different countries.

I wish that this day could bring me a sight of the rolling hills and the endless blue sea and of something beautiful which the hands of men have made.

  • 217.Most people have heard the story of the lost city of Atlantis. But is any part of the story true?
Over two thousand years ago,the Greek writer Plato wrote about Atlantis,an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The island's people were very rich. They built a big city with many great buildings. But the people became greedy- they had many things, but they still wanted more.So the gods became angry.Earthquakes and large waves began to strike the island. Finally,Atlantis sank into the sea.
Many explorers have looked for Atlantis. In 2004,explorer Robert Sarmast reported finding the remains of a city under the sea near Cyprus. However,Sarmast and other scientists later realized the structure he found under the sea were natural, not man- made.Mark Adams, author of the 2016 book Meet Me in Atlantis believes the city was in Morocco.Plato wrote about red and black stone circles around the city.Adams found similar red and black stones in the desert there, very near the Atlantic Ocean.
Most people, however, think Atlantis is simply a story. The purpose of the story may be to teach people not to be greedy.Richard Ellis also wrote a book about Atlantis in 1999.He says "there is not a piece of solid evidence" for a real Atlantis.

    A.Other scientists supported his findings.
B.Richard Ellis said that Atlantis was not real.

D.He published a book titled Meet Me in Atlantis.
(3)Which sentence is closest in meaning to "there is not a piece of solid evidence" for a real Atlantis in paragraph four?

A.There is only one reason to believe the Atlantis story is true.

  • 218.What are your retirement plans?Keep working?Get more exercise?Or learn something new?You may put them on hold. There's a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking,as far as Mars.
On Thursday,National Geographic will show the first- ever Mars show home, giving earthlings(地球人) an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. In the not-so distant year of 2037,the igloo- shaped structure could be the home of your future.
It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved" into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognizable--a kitchen,a bedroom- but there are fundamental differences that are important to human survival.
As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth's,people will need permanent shelter from the sun;society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won't have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting,or natural light that has been bent several times.
Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick to protect people from dangerous rays that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double air-locked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.
"We don't think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre," says Stephen Petranek.jye.ai of How We'll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of sci-fi. "10 to 20 years from now there will certainly be people on Mars," Petranek says.
"We 've had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven't had the will," Petranek says. But two main factors have"completely swung public attitudes".
The private companies' participation has forced government agencies to speed up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society's eye.

B.Its design presents the idea of environmental protection.
C.It has thick walls keeping the home under proper pressure.
D.Its underground passages connect all the buildings together.
(3)According to Petranek, what has sped up the process of sending people to Mars?

A.The great influence of the Mars show home.

  • 219.At school.I was in the top set for maths. My teachers recommended that I study economics and statistics as my A-level subjects, but I had my mind set on a life fulfilled by the arts.
In fact,I was a victim of a gender stereotype made stronger since birth, that men do science and maths and women do arts or languages.Computer science, technology and physics just did not figure in my teenage world view.Nobody popular in my school chose to study those subjects.
Reality struck hard when I began attending job interviews and interviewers would say: "It's great that you speak foreign languages, but what else do you do?" Nobody asked my friends who had studied science or technology those questions.
A survey recently showed that three of the best- paid jobs for women are in the technology sector. It's a sector that really can change the world. We must show girls that technology has an effect on every industry out there, from fashion to architecture to journalism.Anybody can learn to code and these days it's as important as reading and writing.I've realized that at university I'd achieved the wrong major. Not being able to code limits your impact on the world far more than an ignorance of great literature.
Now I have a five- year old daughter.I don't want her to blindly follow gender roles the way I did.
I want her to know the fact that a science or technical degree will not limit her creativity but expand it and broaden her horizons far more than my arts background could.I'm exposing her to Minecraft and apps, which help improve analytical thinking and problem solving skill.I'm hoping that my daughter will discover and accept her potentials in science and want to change the world.

(1)What does the underlined phrase "gender stereotype" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Personal learning style.

    A.Increasing job possibility.

    A.Satisfied.
