2.Nalini Nadkarni didn't play with Barbies as a girl. She was too busy climbing the maple trees in her front yard in Bethesda.
"When I was growing up in Bethesda,we tried to live simply." Nadkarni,a University of Utah biology professor who studies rainforest canopies (樹冠層)said. "And a Barbie didn't quite fit in with living a simple life." Instead, said Nadkarni, she and her sisters were encouraged by their parents to create their own fun.For Nadkarni, that meant tree climbing.
Nadkarni is doing research in Costa Rica on trees. It has never been more important.Nadkarni said,to share what she has learned with a new generation.
"In 2003,I'd been thinking of ways to help get girls more interested in science, and I looked to my young daughter.I knew that girls wanted to play with Barbies and look like Barbies." Nadkarni said. "But what if Barbie had field clothes on and came with a little booklet about canopy pants?" Mattel, the company that makes Barbies, wasn't interested in her idea, but she persisted. She finally created her own treetop dolls.Mattel agreed that she could produce the dolls on a small scale (規(guī)模).
Last year,Nadkarni was thrilled to learn that National Geographic was working with Mattel to come up with a new line of adventure dolls, and that they wanted her advice.
Since sales of the explorer Barbies began in the summer,Nadkarni said, she has heard from girls coast to coast, thanking her for her work in rainforests and asking questions about how they can make a difference to help trees in their own communities.
"When I started hearing from these young kids,I realized they truly understood the terrible situation our forests were in," she said. "They really care, and they want us grown-ups to do something to save our environment.I love climbing trees and learning all I can about them. But getting children excited about protecting our forests is one of the most important things I do."

3.When you're feeling low or even a little depressed, what do you want to do?The answer for most of us is not very much. Our natural response to a bad mood is to rest with our comfort of choice and hibernate(蟄伏)a bit.
But according to new science, the best way to fight off the depression is to force yourself to get out there and do something new.You might have to drag yourself off the sofa, but this research shows you'll be happier for the effort.
For the study, the researchers followed the daily movements of 122 study subjects, using the location-tracking features of their phones for three to four months. They also sent subjects regular text messages asking them to report on their mood.
The scientists discovered the more people visited new and different locations, the happier they felt both that day and the next.Variety and novelty(新穎)seem to lift our mood. "We also find that if we feel better today,we're likely to move around and have more novel experiences and have more experiential diversity the following day," study coauthor and NYU psychology professor Catherine Hartley said.
"These results suggest a reciprocal link between the novel and diverse experiences we have during our daily exploration of our physical environments and our subjective sense of well-being," Hartley commented.
This isn't the first time science has linked new experiences with positive brain benefits.Previous studies have shown that new and challenging experiences light up learning centers in the brain.Just as experience has probably taught you,you learn a lot faster when you get outside your comfort zone.If you've been stuck at home a lot lately,it's no shock that you feel lazy.Your brain is missing out on the novelty and exploration it desires. The good news is,if you can force yourself to do something new, you'll feel you can grow smarter.
(1)According to new science, what should we do to lift our spirits?
A.Explore the outside world.
B.Have a complete rest.
C.Choose to enjoy our hobbies.
D.Stay in the comfort zone.
(2)How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By phoning the subjects.
B.By analyzing the subject's locations.
C.By referring to previous relevant studies.
D.By tracking the subjects' movements and moods.
(3)"A reciprocal link" in Paragraph 5 means a link that proves
A.strong but temporary.
B.weak and indirect.
C.beneficial to each other.
D.suitable for each other.
(4)What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Novelty improves learning effectiveness.
B.It's harmful to get stuck at home too long.
C.Your brain desires novelty and exploration.
D.Exploration is linked with positive emotions.組卷:3引用:1難度:0.5 -
4.In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition of each new skill-- the first spoken words, the first independent steps,or the beginning of reading and wrjye.aiing.It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage.A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early.A young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though,if a child is left alone too much,or without any learning opportunities,he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters.Others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very essential in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept".If they are not sincere and do not practice what they say, their children may grow confused and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of an obvious difference between their parents' principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.
(1)In the process of children's learning new skills parents
A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read
B.should not expect too much of them
C.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own
D.should create as many learning opportunities as possible
(2)The word "precept" (Line3,Para.3)probably means "
A.ideas
B.punishment
C.behavior
D.instructions
(3)In moral matters,parents should
A.observe the rules themselves
B.be aware of the marked difference between adults and children
C.forbid things which have no foundation in morality
D.consistently ensure the security of their children組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5
