"It comes from my family education and faith," Nelson said. "I've always lived by strong principles as far as being a cheerful giver and having an open hand when it comes to giving back so I feel like that really motivated me."
SEMO's President's Scholarship is the school's most celebrated, and is only awarded to five top students annually.Nelson said he sat down and outlined how a scholarship could work to help future students who need financial assistance for college.Originally the plan was to give away $1,000 the one time, but then he met up with his counselor(顧問),Yolanda Curry,to work out a game plan.
"I wasn't expecting it at all!" Curry said. "He told me he had a great idea and wanted to share it with me.I could tell he was really excited."
Nelson,in association with his high school, set up the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship fund. Each year,$1,000 will be awarded to a senior. The money will come from donations,of which there have been $16,000 so far - for a total of $17,435 at last count, according to the school. With the money already in the fund, there's enough to give out a scholarship each year for over a decade. The first scholarship was awarded on June 1 to Darrell Montalvo-Luna.As the first recipient, his scholarship was $2,000.
"Joshua has the heart of a servant leader. He leads by example and he's genuinely excited when good things happen for other people," Curry said. "He's an encourage - he's good at building others up and does what he can to help encourage and motivate those around."

3.Scientists in England are using two self-directed water vehicles to explore the animal and plant life of the Celtic Sea.
The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life.Scientists want to know why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries(電池).It collects information for the National Oceanography Center in Southampton,England, and the World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle's low energy requirements permit it to stay floating on water for up to 30 days.Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite.
Stephen Woodward is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says the vehicle has equipment that can discover small organisms called zooplankton(浮游動(dòng)物)and fish.He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of sea life. The vehicle also creates a map of the sea.
Another vehicle is powered by the sun and the wind.It can stay floating on water for months. The robotic vehicle sends information about the socalled biodiversity hotspots.A biodiversity hotspot is an area of an ocean that has a lot of plant and animal life activity.
Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the Celtic Sea.She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea,attract zooplankton. The zooplankton then attracts fish. She adds that areas with a large increase of fish often attract sea mammals and birds.
Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the sea with manned laboratories.Scientists can spend more time analyzing the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for future management and protection.
(1)Why do the British scientists explore the Celtic Sea?
A.To study the geography of the sea.
B.To learn why the sea is rich in sea life.
C.To test their self-directed water vehicles.
D.To learn about the sea creatures in the sea.
(2)According to the text, the water vehicles
A.a(chǎn)re controlled directly by humans
B.work depending on the map of the sea
C.can send the information back directly
D.can keep floating on water for a long time
(3)According to Lavinia Suberg, the sea mammals and birds
A.a(chǎn)re afraid of living alone
B.mainly feed on zooplankton
C.like to live in warm ocean areas
D.a(chǎn)re especially interested in fish
(4)What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The aim of sea exploration.
B.The cost of exploring the sea.
C.The importance of the water vehicles.
D.Ways to deal with the collected information.組卷:3引用:2難度:0.5

Many years ago,my father, who was 80 at that time, arrived for his regular two-week visit at my home in Karachi. He lived with my elder brother in Lahore most of the time, and for ten years had stuck to his habit of going for an hour-long morning walk to keep fit.In Lahore,he would walk around a park that is quite close to my brother's house.Naturally,he was keen to continue his morning walk while with us in Karachi.
Our preferred park is a 2 km walk from my house and it has a l km walking track.I could not drive him there every day as I had to leave for the office at the same time he wanted to set out.Since there are hardly any footpaths in Karachi,my father said he was delighted to walk on the road as he was certain there wouldn't be much traffic in the morning.
Though I kept him informed that our home was near the park and was made of red bricks in case he got lost,I was less confident so I suggested it would be safer if he changed his walk time to the evening. That way I could take him to the park after work. However,my father-a determined person - said that he could not change his routine for just a few days and insisted that he should be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am.He started doing this and stuck firmly to his schedule. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am,my wife,Qaisa, phoned me in a panic.Worried,I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk.
Not spotting him anywhere,I went to the police station to report my father's disappearance. The station house officer advised me to wait until midnight before filling the report.Since it was only 10 am,I drove back to the park,in the hope of discovering some trace, but in vain.Totally at a loss for what to do next,I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.
