  • 2.This is my son Matthew's last night at home before college.I know that this is good news.I feel proud that Matthew will go to a great school.I know that this is his finest hour. But looking at the suitcases on his bed sends me out of the room to a hidden corner where I can't stop crying.
Through the sorrow,I feel a rising embarrassment."Pull yourself together!" I tell myself. There are parents sending their kids off to battle zones. How dare I feel so shocked and upset?
One of the great gifts of my life has been having my boys,Matthew and Johnowen.Through them,I have explored the mysterious, complicated bond between fathers and sons.As my wife and I raised them,I have discovered the love and loss between my father and me.After my parents' divorce,I spent weekends with my dad in Ohio.By the time Sunday came around,I was unable to enjoy the day's activities because I was already afraid of the goodbye of the evening.
Now,standing among Matthew's accumulation of possessions,I realise it's me who has become a boy again. All my sadness and longing to hold on to things are back, sweeping over me as they did when I was a child.
His bed is tidy and spare. It already has the feel of a guest bed.In my mind I replay wrapping him in his favourite blanket. That was our nightly routine until one evening he said,"Daddy,I don't think I need a blanket tonight." I think of all the times we lay among the covers reading.I look at the bed and think of all the recent times I was annoyed at how late he was sleeping.I'll never have to worry about that again,I realise.
For his part,Matthew has been a rock.He is treating his leaving as just another day at the office. And I'm glad. After all, someone's got to be strong.I'm proud that he is charging into the first chapter of his adult life with such confidence.

(1)What does the writer mean by "Pull yourself together!"?

    A.Get up.
    B.Cheer up.

  • 3.Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material.Sian Beilock,a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers.The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources(資源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher,Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution.Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored(得分)an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved(提高)their performance by an average of 5%.Next,the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated(不相關(guān)的)to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B-for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious,and who'd done our writing intervention(干預(yù)),all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and grades. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam?Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.

(1)What do the students start worrying about before an exam?

A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
(2)What is the solution developed by researchers?

A.Making the students focused on the test.
B.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C.Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D.Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
(3)According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test
    .
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
(4)We can infer from the last paragraph that
    .
A.writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B.we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C.the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D.it doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam

  • 4.The size of the British Isles often leads people to think that the languages spoken in its countries of England,Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland are somewhat the same.At first, visitors are often surprised to find that they have difficulty in understanding the accents and dialects of certain regions.Even in England there are many different dialects.
Experts believe that for most English people, the places they come from are very important to them.Accents are clues to where people were born and where they grew up.Although some people may change the way they speak during their lifetime, most people carry at least some evidence of their accents and dialects throughout their lives. In addition to the regional accents of England, there can also be class differences among the accents.People are often able to make instant and unconscious judgments about a stranger's class by listening to his or her accent. Both the words and the pronunciation of an individual reflect his or her social position.
It is agreed that in England, the kind of English spoken by a person plays a leading role that generally is not important in North America. The importance of accents and their cultural and social relationships are well represented in films and on television in Britain. The film My Fair Lady based on George Bernard Shaw's 1912 play Pygmalion is often said to be a wonderful example of how social class and the accent were, and still are, linked in Britain.

B.In Britain some films show us the importance of accents.
C.The English spoken by a person plays an important role in North America.
D.An Englishman's accent is a clue to where he was born and where he grew up.
(3)How do people in England know a person's class?

    A.By speaking to him.
    B.By guessing.
    C.By showing something to him.
    D.By judging from his appearance.
