  • 2.Kimberly Arcand,a visualization scientist for NASA,has made it her life's work to help tell the stories of space.Having authored several astrophysics (天體物理學(xué)) nonfiction books over the years,Arcand recently turned her attention to children's books. She released Goodnight Exomoon last year,an "astronomical parody (天文的模仿作品), "which takes the classic children's book Goodnight Moon and explores planetary science in a way that is readable for the very young.
The idea,Arcand says, was born when her own children refused to sleep. "I would read for hours to try to get them to go to sleep and they loved Goodnight Moon. One day I could not imagine reading Goodnight Moon again so I started creating stories based on it, " says Arcand. She wrote down one of the versions of her playful parody, and then put it in a drawer where it stayed for nearly a decade.
Then,in 2018,scientists found what they believed was the first exomoon (系外衛(wèi)星) orbiting the exoplanet known as Kepler-1625 b. "With that first exomoon candidate,it reminded me that I had written the story, " says Arcand. So,the scientist pulled her would-be book out of the drawer and brought it to life.
"In the great telescope room there was a telephone,an atmospheric balloon, and a picture of a satellite flying by the moon…" begins the story, setting readers in a room that houses a huge telescope. The story goes on to introduce children to some of the more modern tools that astronomers use, like accelerometers, micrometers and satellites, teaching them about astronomical objects like comets and exomoons.
Arcand hopes the book will excite "space fans",and that it will inspire children and especially young girls to see the field of science as one that is approachable. This desire drives Arcand's scientific work,as well. When not penning parodies,Arcand spends her time making complex concepts and theories more accessible to a variety of audiences, from fellow researchers to students and the general public.

(1)What do we know about Goodnight Exomoon?

A.It is a classic astrophysics nonfiction book.
B.It is a continuation of Goodnight Moon.
C.It is accessible to young readers.
    D.It is produced by NASA.
(2)What motivated Arcand to write Goodnight Exomoon?

    A.The discovery of Kepler-1625 b.
B.The lack of science books for children.
C.Her great love for the book Goodnight Moon.
D.Her experience of reading bedtime stories to her kids.
(3)What can readers learn from Goodnight Exomoon?

    A.History of moon exploration.
    B.Tools for space exploration.
    C.Stories of famous astronauts.
    D.Possibilities for space travel.
(4)What does Arcand devote herself to doing?

    A.Spreading knowledge of space.
    B.Giving training to female scientists.

  • 3.The story of The emperor's new clothes is one of Andersen's best-known works.Cheaters fool the emperor into believing they have made him a fantastic suit.Courtiers (侍臣) dare not say that the emperor is naked;it takes a child to point out the obvious. How many companies have ploughed ahead with expensive projects that were favoured by the CEO,even when other managers have had doubts? The moral is that people are often too restricted by social practice to state their views.
In his new book Rebel Ideas:The Power of Diverse Thinking,Matthew Syed argues that the key to dealing with this problem is "cognitive (認(rèn)知) diversity",in other words, assembling a team of people with different perspectives and intellectual backgrounds. It is not just about selecting people for teams from both sexes and various races.Hire only Cambridge politics graduates or Stanford software engineers and they will have studied under the same professors and absorbed similar world views regardless of their gender or skin colour.
There is another element to selecting a good team:ensuring that those viewpoints are heard and respected.A study of over 300 projects by the Rotterdam School of Management found that those led by junior managers were more likely to succeed than those led by senior managers-maybe because other team members were less scared about pointing out potential dangers to someone of lower rank.
The ability to speak up within an organization, without fear of punishment,is known as "psychological safety".Mr.Syed cites a study of teams at Google, which found that self-reported psychological safety was by far the most important factor behind successful teamwork at the technology giant.
One way to overcome shyness while brainstorming, for instance,is for everyone to write down their ideas but ensure their names are never known. That way, opinions about thoughts are less closely tied to the status of the thinker and can be tested against each other with less fear or favour.

(1)Why is The story of the emperor's new clothes mentioned?

    A.To confirm its popularity.
    B.To argue for children's wisdom.
C.To make fun of the adults.
D.To indicate the importance of speaking up.
(2)Which of the following makes an effective team?

A.People with the same cognitive origin.
B.People with more races and gender.
    C.People with various academic backgrounds.
    D.People following their leaders unconditionally.
(3)Why does a team with a junior manager tend to succeed?

    A.It encourages members to compete.
    B.It creates a relaxing atmosphere.
C.It allows members to voice opinions.
D.It thinks little of social ranks.
(4)What do we know about "psychological safety"?

    A.It is a term invented by Mr.Syed.
    B.It contributes to diversity thinking.
C.It is a secret weapon of the Google.
D.It is a project done at the Rotterdam.

六、讀后續(xù)寫

  • 9.My family moved in a small house in Brighton,Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill,an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. "We need to make the hole bigger," he said jokingly.Later I knew that he lived alone.
Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard.I was a chatterbox.I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me.I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me — we were both lonely and anxious — and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me.It was a wonderful connection.
There weren't any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy,so I mostly played in the yard with my dog.I had a lot of imaginary friends — a whole family, actually, with a wife, children,a best friend...no joke.Weird kid.
One day,my parents asked Bill whether he'd watch me while they were away on business. This worked for everyone,so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence.Bill had a spare room in his house, which became "my" room.
Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor(割草機(jī)) someday and I was always looking forward to it.In winter,Bill would attach a snowplow(鏟雪機(jī)) to the front of the dawn tractor.I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. "Sure you will. You'll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing," Bill said with a smile.
One snowy morning,an idea suddenly hit me.My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, "What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?" My parents said I could go over and ask him.
    注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;2.請(qǐng)按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。
I knocked on his door, sat down in his living room, and asked, "Can I adopt you as my grandpa?"______
The next morning, while learning to drive the lawn tractor with a snowplow,I accidentally plowed down our chain-link fence._____________
