1.Different countries have different cultures, today let's learn something about them.
In the US and Germany
In the US,a set of kitchen knives seems like the perfect gift for a wedding or holiday. However,in certain European countries like Germany, some people think that a knife presented as a gift will make your friends angry. But there is a way to deal with it.Tie a penny to the knife or the gift box.The receiver then returns the penny to you as a "payment".
In Zimbabwe(津巴布韋)
In Zimbabwe,it is not uncommon to be directly asked for a gift. And if you receive a gift suddenly, the worst thing you can do is to refuse it,even if the family is poor. What you should do is to show your thanks.Gestures(手勢(shì))are better than words.A dance can speak a thousand words.
In India
In India, gifts are given with the right hand.As left hands are considered unclean in Indian culture, gestures such as touching, passing money,or giving gifts are to be done with the right hand.Contrary to some other cultures,an odd(奇數(shù))number of objects or money stands for good luck.
In China
Chinese New Year has a rich set of traditions. One of the most popular customs of this holiday is giving out money in red envelopes(紅包).The gifts are meant to bring good luck.
In Israel(以色列)
Although giving gifts is a kind gesture,thank-you cards and notes are not a common part of the giftimple,if you want to give others some money as a gift, please place your money in an envelope to ensure it's received in a respectful manner,or they will be angry.

2.It was the 9th day of Wuhan lockdown(封鎖)starting on January 23.My parents left because they had been running fever for several days and they were showing other symptoms of COVID-19.
The virus,COVID-19,is somehow fearsome because it does not discriminate(區(qū)別對(duì)待)in choosing who it infects(感染).And if the older people were infected, the situation could be worse,so I was wondering whether my parents would make it.
On the second day,my parents called and asked me how I was.We talked using Facetime, and the moment I saw mom lying there with an oxygen mask and my dad could not talk without breathing heavily,I realized that I had to live on my own.
But two weeks later,I got a fever and had to go into quarantine(隔離)to be observed(觀察)for 14 days.Fortunately,my illness turned out to be not COVID-19.Everything there was busy, and there seemed to be a shortage of medical staff and materials(材料)were in short supply.Even though the doctors and nurses were covered from head to toe,I could see how tired they were when I looked into their bloodshot eyes.
Most of the patients were really understanding, but of course there were those who were not,and complained(抱怨)loudly, but all the doctors and nurses tried their best to deal with it in a calming way.
When the quarantine was over, every patient thanked the workers for what they had done, but the answer they received was exactly the same: "That's what we're here for. "

4.Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long.To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you.Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules:be honest;be generous (寬宏大量的);be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts.Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out.If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust.Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes.Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you.By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem.Something may go wrong at school.Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so that you can understand the problem better.
