  • 2.Puzzled face asks for help Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework?
Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we've found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration(挫折) is our way of asking others for help.
Scientists at the university gave children and chimpanzees(黑猩猩) an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn't work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimpanzees' did not.
Humans and chimpanzees have many facial expressions that share the same meaning.A human smile is the same as a chimpanzee showing its teeth in happiness.
Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved(進(jìn)化)to use this facial expression to ask for help.We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.
According to Dr Albert Mehrabian,a well-known professor of psychology at the University of California,Los Angeles(UCLA),only 7% of human communication happens through words and 55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.
With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.

(1)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Frowning.
    B.The expression.
    C.Something difficult.
    D.A sign of effort.
(2)According to the recent study, people's expression of effort or frustration tells others that
    .
    A.they need help
    B.they can do things themselves
    C.they will give up
    D.they want to be alone
(3)Which of the following about the study is TRUE?

A.Scientists gave the chimpanzees an easy puzzle.
B.The chimpanzees smiled as they worked out the puzzle.
C.The chimpanzees' face didn't show determination or effort.
D.The chimpanzees used other expressions to ask for help.
(4)According to Dr Albert Mehrabian,we learn that
    .
A.body language is very important in human communication
B.people don't like to use words to communicate
C.human expressions are not a kind of body language
D.words can't help much in communication

  • 3.Artificial intelligence,or AI,has slowly begun to influence higher education around the world. Now,one new AI tool could change the way university students evaluate their professor. The tool is called Hubert,a teacher evaluation tool that appears as an AI-powered chatbot.Instead of filling out a form, students use a chat window to give feedback(反饋) on the course and their professor.Afterwards,Hubert categorizes the students' comments for the professor to review.
Hubert is free for educators to use.More than 600 teachers have used it already. The goal of the new Hubert program is to improve education by giving teachers detailed, organized feedback from students.
Viktor Nordmark, from Sweden, started the company in 2015,with several friends. Before creating Hubert, the founders asked teachers what would improve their teaching skills. The answer,Nordmark said, was qualitative(定性的) feedback from their students. In other words, teachers wanted students to write detailed answers to open-ended questions about their experiences in class.
Qualitative feedback is different from the survey responses, which students are often asked to provide at the end of a class. "This kind of data takes a lot of time for professors to collect and analyze," Nordmark said. And for the students,it can also be "really boring to fill out." So Nordmark and his friends designed Hubert as a compromise between a traditional survey and a personal interview. "You can reach a really large crowd, but you can also get really qualitative data back," Nordmark said.
Now,when Hubert receives comments from students,it compares them with the information already in its system to organize the data.Nordmark says that Hubert will continue to get smarter as it receives more comments in the future.Nordmark says he and his co-founders have plans to make Hubert more flexible and accurate. They hope to give teachers the possibility of selecting their own evaluation questions.

(1)What can be inferred about traditional teacher evaluation?

A.Its data is easy to collect.
B.Users are charged for using it.
    C.Students needn't fill out forms.
D.Students find it dull to take part in it.
    (2)According to the text,qualitative feedback

A.can improve the students' performance at school
B.is students' answers to teachers' questions in class
C.can be obtained by asking students to fill out forms
D.is detailed responses to questions not for fixed answers
(3)What is one of the advantages of Hubert at present?

A.Being able to change itself to become smarter.
B.Saving much time when collecting survey forms.
C.Taking on the strengths of a survey and an interview.
D.Enabling teachers to select their own evaluation questions.
(4)What is the text mainly about?

    A.The characteristics of qualitative feedback.
B.A new AI-powered tool of teacher evaluation.
C.The changes in the way teachers are evaluated.
D.A potential revolution in the educational system.

  • 4.The third-generation hybrid rice(雜交水稻)which was developed by Yuan Longping, the "father of hybrid rice",and his team ran its first public yield(產(chǎn)量)monitoring from Monday to Tuesday and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety,G3-1 S/P19,came to1046.3 kg per mu(about 667 square meters),based on two pieces of land in Qingzhu Village under the city of Hengyang in central China's Hunan Province.
"Some previous high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing(播種)to harvesting, while the figure was shortened to around 125 days for the new variety. This is one of the most important features(特征)of the third-generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides(殺蟲劑)and fertilizers(化肥),thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency." said Qian Qian, the deputy director of the China National Rice Research Institute.
Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third-generation hybrid rice is easier to be cultivated(種植)by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not "ideal conditions" carefully selected beforehand but were close to the paddies(稻田)of ordinary farmers.
Nowadays.China's average yield of rice is about 500 kg per mu.Ordinary farmers can produce 600 kg to 700 kg of rice per mu by growing some excellent second-generation hybrid rice varieties. However, under the same planting conditions and environment, the yield of the third-generation hybrid rice could reach 800 kg per mu.China now feeds around 20 percent of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's arable(可耕種的)land.
At present,Yuan's team has nine third-generation hybrid rice combinations under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third-generation hybrid rice has the comprehensive strength to promote a greener and more sustainable development of China's rice production with higher quality and yield.

(1)What feature of the new hybrid rice does Qian Qian mainly talk about?

A.It saves a lot more water.
    B.It achieves a higher yield.
    C.It saves much more farmland.
D.It has a shorter growing period.
(2)Why is the new hybrid rice not tested in ideal areas?

A.The ordinary farmers master planting technology.
B.The researchers want to reduce the experiment cost.
C.The growing conditions the new hybrid rice needs are simple.
D.The previous rice farming provides researchers with experience.
(3)What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.The high output of the third-generation hybrid rice.
B.The future of the new hybrid rice variety.
C.The advanced technology of the research on hybrid rice.
D.The differences between the three hybrid rice varieties.
(4)Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A guide book.
    B.A news report.
    C.An advertisement.
    D.A fashion magazine.
