  • 1.Tipping customs differ from country to country. You need to know how to tip in the country that you're in when you travel;or you'll leave servers annoyed everywhere you go.Here are just a few guidelines to tipping in different countries.
    Dubai
In Dubai it's a rule for restaurants to charge 10% tip on all restaurant and bar bills You can add a couple of dirhams(迪拉姆,貨幣單位)to this if you feel like it.Waiters are not paid very much in Dubai,so it is always very appreciated.
    Brazil
There will always be a standard 10% service charge added to your bill, and you won't necessarily have to tip.If you do feel like being generous,an extra 5-10% will really make your server very happy.Just remember to do this as skillfully as possible - Brazilians don't make a big show of this.
    Czech Republic
While locals in the Czech Republic don't leave tips, that doesn't mean you're off the hook.Foreign tourists are definitely expected to leave some kind of tip for service - as long as you're in a high tourist traffic area, like Prague for instance. The standard tip is 10%.
    India
Here it is often considered appropriate for a tourist to tip your server 5-10%.You have to adjust that number by yourself though. This is how the rules go in this country. If the bill is for a small meal and totals less than 300 rupees, tip the full 10%.If the bill is higher, tip towards the 5%.

Unfortunately, many people didn't care the warnings. However,Scott Cullymore does. When he's not working, the 53-year-old man can be found hiking up and down Camelback a couple of times a day, handing out cold bottles of water to tired hikers. He has helped so many hikers that he has earned a heavenly nickname:the Water Angel.
Cullymore was on Camelback Mountain one day in 2015 when a British tourist died after being lost nearly six hours in the July heat. That experience inspired him to start helping people caught unaware of the danger of Mother Nature."They underestimate(低估)the mountain, and they get themselves in trouble," he said.If a hiker has a flushed face and is not sweating any more,he reaches into his backpack, pulls out a bottle, and hands it to the person."It's misleading that we're in the middle of the city. But the truth is,you can die up here, and nobody would know."

  • 3.You may have apologized plenty of times in your life. And there's a good chance you've also uttered the phrase,"I never meant to hurt you." Stop doing that, says author Caroline Myss.
In a talk,Myss,a spiritual seeker(精神導(dǎo)師),took on the topic of forgiveness and healing, and explained in certain terms why "I never meant to hurt you" is never a good apology,no matter who it comes from.
Traditionally,a person always comes up to you and say,"Wow,bummer.I'm sorry I did this, but, you know.I never meant to hurt you. And,hey, can we just call it a day?" Myss says that is never appropriate.
That type of apology won't sit well with the person on the receiving end."That whole little thing — I never meant to hurt you—that's the thing you can't forgive," she says."It goes right to your soul, that toxic, sick feeling."
Instead,Myss says it's important to approach the conversation differently.Ultimately,it's about offering more than an apology. It's about sharing a soul-to-soul confession."Let's redo the scene," Myss says."The person comes up to you and says like this…I need to tell you something.I consciously knew what I was doing.I consciously knew it,and I have to call it something else:It was my mistake.I heard my heart tell me not to do this and I didn't listen. It didn't matter to me.And I know mat my actions redirected the course of your life.It was conscious. It was a sin, because it was conscious. And how much it hurt you did not stop me.This is not a boo-boo(一時(shí)疏忽).This is not just an apology.I am confessing my soul to you.jye.ai I'm asking now for your forgiveness."
She points out that this is how deeply within the soul apologies are supposed to resonate."That's what heals," she says.

(1)What do people generally do when they apologize?

    A.They explain some certain terms.
    B.They sincerely ask for forgiveness.
    C.They apologize plenty of times.
D.They say they never meant to hurt others.
(2)What's Myss's opinion of the saying "I never meant to hurt you"?

A.She thinks that it is a topic of forgiveness and healing.
B.She thinks that we should give up saying that.
C.She thinks that it needs explanation.
D.She thinks that it is a soul-to-soul confession.
(3)What does Myss think a real apology should be?

    A.A soul touching confession.
    B.A boo-boo.
    C.A grown-up feeling freezing.
    D.A light conversation.
(4)What does the underlined "it" in paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The unconscious action that one person does.
B.The mistake a person makes to another person.
C.The scene t11 at should be redo.
D.The apology one person owes another person.

  • 4.Giving children music lessons won't just lead them to a world of melody——it could also greatly improve their language skills.
While numerous studies have shown that learning an instrument can impact things like language ability,it wasn't understood if this was a side effect of a general improvement to cognitive skills,or something that directly affected language processing.
Now,we know more about that, from a study of 74 Chinese kindergarten children, led by neuroscientist Robert Desimone."The children did show improvements in word discrimination (辨別),particularly for consonants(聲母)," explains Desimone.
For the study,Desimone's team randomly divided the Mandarin—speaking children into three groups. One group received a 45-minute piano lesson three times a week, while another received extra reading instruction classes. The third group acted as controls, taking no extra lessons beyond their usual routine. The classes lasted for six months, after which the children were tested on their ability to discriminate words based on differences in tone, consonants,or vowels.
The test results showed that the children who had taken piano lessons performed significantly better at discriminating between words, compared against the children who took extra reading lessons.Compared to the control group, both the music learners and the extra reading group did better in discriminating words.
To learn why these differences happen, the researchers studied the children's brain activity via electroencephalography (EEG) and found the piano group showed greater sensitivity to tonal changes. The thinking goes, having music lessons helped develop this tonal sensitivity, which partly explains better word discrimination.
It's also worth emphasizing that the musical education helped these children outperform their peers in language tests—even beyond the results of kids who took extra reading classes."It's better than extra reading. That means schools could invest in music," Desimone says.

    (1)What did previous studies show?

    A.Instruments learning helps language ability.
B.Language is a side effect of cognitive skills.
C.Learning an instrument slows down language processing.
D.Extra reading is needed to improve language skills.
(2)What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.Why the study was carried out.
    B.The differences between word discrimination.
C.How the study was carried out.
    D.How the groups were divided.
(3)According to paragraph 6,why were there differences between word discrimination?

A.Because of the limitation of brain activity.
    B.Because of electroencephalography.
C.Because of tonal changes between different groups.
D.Because of different levels of tonal sensitivity.
(4)What does the underline word "outperform" in paragraph 7 mean?

    A.Compare with.
    B.Invest in.
    C.Do better than.
    D.Differ from.

  • 19.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開(kāi)頭語(yǔ)續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
There was this little girl sitting by herself in the park.Everyone passed her by and never stopped to see why she looked so sad.
Dressed in a worn pink dress, barefoot and dirty, the girl just sat and watched the people go by.She never tried to speak and she never said a word. Many people passed but no one would stop.
The next day I decided to go back to the park in curiosity to see if the little girl would still be there.Yes,she was there, right in the very spot as she was yesterday, and still with the sad look in her eyes.Today I was to make my own move and walk over to the little girl. For as we all know,a park full of strange people is not a place for young children to play alone.
As I got closer, the little girl lowered her eyes slightly to avoid my intent stare. As I approached her,I could see the terrible shape of her back clearly Her back was humped(駝背的).
I smiled to let her know it was OK.I was there to help to talk.I sat down beside her and opened with a simple "hello".The little girl acted shocked, and stammered a "hi" after a long stare into my eyes.I smiled and she shyly smiled back.
    注意:
    1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為100左右;
    2.請(qǐng)按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。
