  • 1.We produce 500 billion of plastic bags in a year worldwide and they (1)
    away polluting oceans, (2)
wildlife and getting dumped in landfills where they take up to 1000 years to decompose.Researchers (3)
    unsuccessfully looking for a solution yet.The (4)
Canadian high school student,Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, has discovered a way to make plastic bags (5)
    in as (6)
as 3 months,a finding that won him first prize at the Canada Wide Science Fair,a 10,000 prize,a 20,000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a major environmental issue.Burd's strategy was simple:Since plastic does eventually degrade,it must be eaten by microbes (微生物). (7)
those microbes could be identified,we could put them to work eating the plastic much (8)
    than under normal conditions. (9)
this goal in mind,he grounded plastic bags into a powder and concocted (調(diào)制) a solution of household chemicals, yeast (酵母) and tap water (10)
microbes growth. Then he added the plastic powder and (11)
the microbes work their magic (12)
3 months. Finally,he tested the resulting bacterial (細(xì)菌的) culture on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control.Sure enough, the plastic (13)
exposed to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control after six weeks. The inputs are cheap:maintaining the required temperature (14)
little energy because microbes produce heat as they work, and the only outputs (15)
water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.

  • 3.Since the beginning of history, man has been fascinated by the idea of living forever,of winning the fight against death and disease. So far, this has only remained a dream, though a very powerful one. Many people have wondered if it would be possible to find a way to preserve (保存) human bodies, and what would be the best way to preserve human bodies.
It has long been known that meat and fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing;in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans and in fact many people have explored this possibility.
However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals, which are not only larger than the volume of the water originally in the cells, but also from sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells.
In the 1940s Dr B.J.Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them.Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of damage,Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them.
Using living cells from chicken,Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin,a clear thick liquid made chiefly from fats and oils. Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen.
Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperatures.Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature very much below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable able patients until the day they can be cured.
