  • 3.Two girls, one older and other younger became close friends as a result of the same misfortune they met with.A fire made them lose their homes and their mothers. Both of them were disfigured, and had several operations on their faces.Yet they said they were fortunate enough to be alive.
Girl A (the older one) returning from the hospital's ICU to her bed was scared and almost passed out at the first looking like a ghost (鬼) as she saw herself reflected by the stainless (不銹鋼) street ceilings around her bed.She said,"I met a ghost on the ceiling." How horrible!I was really terrified but I didn't collapse (崩潰) completely. When is it that one feels grateful for his or her survival? It must be now like this:thank goodness I am still alive.
The first phone call that Girl A gave to Girl B (the younger one) raised a question: "Do you know why I am so glad?" She gave the answer without waiting for a reply. "Because when I got hold of a loop(d吊圈) on a bar in a bus to make myself stand like others,I felt very happy that I had a pair of hands.
Girl B's words were also very moving. She replied: "Hey you know, don't be surprised by what I am going to say.It was true.Let me ask you first.Do I look petty ?No,of course not.But before eleven years old I was pretty.I had snow-white skin, big eyes and a round face.I was also a wild kid.I think I had grown up naughty if I was not properly educated.I would fall in love with other boys and become a bad girl if I had not met the disaster.I dislike going to school.I'd prefer playing all day long.If there were not such a fire,I would not have bad chances of meeting so many kind strangers, that help me to realize how wonderful life is.If there were not such an accident,I would grow into a beautiful lady but now I am more considerate, grateful, hardworking and independent of others.Such a person I am today will always be pretty all my life.

  • 5.According to a new study, cats may be just as smart as dogs. Both cats and dogs may have episodic memory (情景記憶),similar to that of human beings.
The discovery shows that cats can recall memories of positive experiences like eating a delicious snack. The study was a test of episodic memory.Episodic memory means memory of past experiences that happened at a special time and place.
In the test, cats were led to four open bowls of food. They were allowed to eat from two of them. After fifteen minutes, empty bowls took the place of the old ones. Then the same cats returned to look for food again. They spent more time searching for the old bowls,
It seemed that the cats were able to remember the information of "what" and "where" about the bowls. This discovery suggests that they may have episodic memory. However,it's still not clear whether cats can truly experience past memories in the same way as human beings do. "It's difficult to know whether the cats can subjectively (主觀地) remember the experience," Nick Diamond,a researcher at the University of Toronto, explained.
Still, the test plays an important role in the development of memory research in animals. "It opens the door to new studies. How long can cats' memories last?We may do some research on this in the future," Professor Laurie Santos from Yale University told BBC News.
The road to new discoveries is long and difficult.Though there are lots of problems to be solved and discussed along the way, such studies do lead us a step closer to the final success.

B.why cats only remember good experiences
C.how long cats memories can last
    D.how humans recall past memories
(4)What does the writer think of the study?
